Wie zijn wij?

De Gentse coalitie voor Palestina bestaat uit Gentse organisaties die samen ijveren voor een duurzame en rechtvaardige oplossing voor de Israëlische koloniale oorlog.

Naar aanleiding van de onophoudelijke genocidale oorlog in Palestina voelden wij de nood om ons in oktober 2023 te verenigen en samen een krachtig signaal naar buiten te brengen. Als bezorgde en sociaal-geëngageerde Gentenaars moeten wij actie ondernemen. Wij hebben het niet alleen over de huidige escalatie van geweld, maar over de oorzaken ervan: de situatie die al 75 jaar aan de gang is.

Als coalitie staan wij voor:

een onmiddellijk en duurzaam staakt-het-vuren in Gaza.

een einde aan de genocide en de etnische zuivering van de Palestijnen.

het respect voor het internationaal humanitair recht door alle betrokken partijen.

een einde aan de blokkade van de Gazastrook.

een einde aan de bezetting van de Westelijke Jordaanoever en Oost-Jeruzalem.

een einde aan het bevolken van illegale Israëlische kolonies .

een einde aan het Israëlische apartheidsregime.

de vrijlating van politieke gevangenen en gijzelaars. Daarbij horen ook de Palestijnen die zonder proces “administratief” zijn opgesloten of door een militaire rechtbank werden veroordeeld, zonder de mogelijkheden waar burgers recht op hebben in een democratische staat.

zelfbeschikkingsrecht voor de Palestijnse bevolking.

Bij al deze eisen baseren wij ons op regels die opgenomen zijn in de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens, resoluties van de Verenigde Naties en conclusies van internationaal erkende mensenrechtenorganisaties. Wij wensen de bevolking verder correct te informeren over de situatie van de Palestijnen en vragen het Gents stadsbestuur ons daarin te steunen. Wij hopen dat het stadsbestuur alles zal ondernemen wat in haar macht ligt om deze doelstellingen mee te helpen realiseren.

Waarom spreken wij het Gents stadsbestuur aan ?

We verwelkomen de voorstellen die de Gentse gemeenteraad op 27/11/2023 goedkeurde, en het gesprek dat we hadden met de burgemeester en schepenen op 18/12/2023, maar hier kan het niet bij blijven. Sindsdien zijn er nog eens tienduizenden onschuldige Palestijnse burgers vermoord. Vooreerst vragen we hoe de goedgekeurde voorstellen effectief zullen worden uitgevoerd en welke stappen daarin al gezet zijn. Daarnaast benadrukken wij dat er nog bijkomende acties levensnoodzakelijk zijn voor de bevolking van Palestina.

Wij vragen van het Gents stadsbestuur:

om onmiddellijk en blijvend alle bedrijven uit te sluiten die medeplichtig zijn aan het apartheidsregime van Israël en de mensenrechtenschendingen t.a.v. de Palestijnen.

om, in naam van de Gentse bevolking, de Belgische overheid te overtuigen van volgende acties:

Een krachtdadige oproep tot een duurzaam staakt-het-vuren in Gaza.

Een verbod op doorvoer van wapens naar Israël.

Bijkomende economische en diplomatieke sancties tegen Israël, te beginnen met de opschorting van het EU-Israël Associatieakkoord in toepassing van de mensenrechtenclausule ervan (Art. 2).

Steun aan de onvervreemdbare rechten van het Palestijnse volk (met name gegarandeerd door resolutie 3236 van de Algemene Vergadering van de VN van 1974) en concrete acties om die rechten effectief te waarborgen.

De VN blijven steunen in alle resoluties, ongeacht het standpunt van de VS en Israël.

In Europa de reeds ingenomen standpunten over staakt het vuren te handhaven en verdere stappen te zetten, zoals hierboven beschreven. Het voorzitterschap is daarvoor een goede aanleiding.

om in de stadscommunicatie altijd duidelijk te stellen:

dat het niet gaat om een conflict met twee gelijke partijen, maar wél om een kolonisator (Israël) en een gekoloniseerd volk (Palestijnen).

dat Israël momenteel een genocide pleegt op het Palestijnse volk.

dat dit alles niet startte op 7 oktober 2023, maar dat de oorzaak ligt in het zionisme, dat reeds meer dan 100 jaar bestaat en de Palestijnen wil verjagen van het grondgebied. Verdere annexatie van Palestijns gebied staat als prioriteit ingeschreven in het Israëlisch regeerakkoord.

De afgelopen maanden heeft onze coalitie publiekelijk actie gevoerd in Gent en we zullen dit blijven doen om onze standpunten kracht bij te zetten. We blijven verder gaan, tot er in het Midden-Oosten een vreedzame en duurzame oplossing gevonden is, waarin de Palestijnen niet meer onderdrukt worden.

Om dit doel te bereiken, organiseert de coalitie demonstraties, solidariteitsacties en symbolische initiatieven. We trachten ook een nationale rol te vervullen door initiatieven op nationaal niveau te ondersteunen, die georganiseerd worden door onze partners. Onze inzet blijft altijd geweldloos, en we tolereren geen enkele vorm van racisme, antisemitisme, steun aan oorlogsmisdaden of aanvallen op burgers.

The Ghent Coalition for Palestine consists of Ghent-based organizations that collectively advocate for a sustainable and just solution to the Israeli colonial war.

In response to the ongoing genocidal war in Palestine, we felt the need to unite in October 2023 and send a powerful message together. As concerned and socially engaged residents of Ghent, we must take action. We are not only addressing the current escalation of violence but also its underlying causes, a situation that has persisted for 75 years.

As a coalition, we stand for:

An immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza.

An end to the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

Respect for international humanitarian law by all involved parties.

An end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

An end to the occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

An end to the population of illegal Israeli colonies.

An end to the Israeli apartheid regime.

The release of political prisoners and hostages, including Palestinians detained “administratively” without due process or sentenced by a military court without the rights afforded to civilians in a democratic state.

The right to self-determination for the Palestinian population.

All these demands are based on principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, United Nations resolutions, and conclusions of internationally recognized human rights organizations. We aim to inform the public accurately about the Palestinian situation and request the support of the Ghent city government in this regard. We hope the city government will do everything in its power to help achieve these objectives.

Why are we addressing the Ghent city government?

We welcome the proposals approved by the Ghent City Council on 27/11/2023 and the meeting we had with the mayor and aldermen on 18/12/2023, but this cannot be the end of it. Since then, tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians have been killed. Firstly, we inquire about the effective implementation of the approved proposals and the steps already taken. Additionally, we emphasize the necessity of further actions for the population of Palestine.

We request the Ghent city government:

To immediately and permanently exclude all companies complicit in Israel’s apartheid regime and human rights violations against Palestinians.

To, on behalf of the people of Ghent, convince the Belgian government to undertake the following actions:

A strong call for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza.

A ban on the transit of weapons to Israel.

Additional economic and diplomatic sanctions against Israel, starting with the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement in accordance with its human rights clause (Article 2).

Support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people (particularly guaranteed by UN General Assembly Resolution 3236 of 1974) and concrete actions to effectively safeguard those rights.

Continued support for the United Nations in all resolutions, regardless of the positions of the US and Israel.

In Europe, to maintain the already adopted positions on ceasefires and take further steps as described above. The presidency provides a good opportunity.

To clearly state in city communication:

That this is not a conflict between two equal parties but rather a colonizer (Israel) and a colonized people (Palestinians).

That Israel is currently committing genocide against the Palestinian people.

That all of this did not start on October 7, 2023, but has its roots in Zionism, which has existed for over 100 years and aims to displace Palestinians from their territory. Further annexation of Palestinian territory is a priority outlined in the Israeli coalition agreement.

Over the past months, our coalition has publicly taken action in Ghent, and we will continue to do so to reinforce our positions. We persist until a peaceful and sustainable solution is found in the Middle East, where Palestinians are no longer oppressed.

To achieve this goal, the coalition organizes demonstrations, solidarity actions, and symbolic initiatives. We also seek to play a national role by supporting initiatives at the national level organized by our partners. Our commitment remains nonviolent, and we do not tolerate any form of racism, anti-Semitism, support for war crimes, or attacks on civilians.

Op zaterdag 20 april verzamelen we voor een nieuwe solidariteitsmars voor Palestina! We wandelen door het historische centrum van Gent.

De mars staat in het teken van Prisoners´ Day op 17 april, een internationale dag gewijd aan de gevangenen voor de Palestijnse zaak en steun voor hun rechten.

UPDATE: Gisteren 28/03 hadden we met de Gentse Coalitie voor Palestina, een ontmoeting met de Gentse politie. Dit urgente overleg kwam er op hun vraag. Er zijn grote vermoedens dat de Gentse Mars voor Palestina – gepland voor deze zaterdag – het onderwerp zou kunnen worden van confrontaties tussen Gentenaars (Turkse en Koerdische Gentenaars). We hebben vernomen dat de politie een negatief advies heeft gegeven aan de burgemeester omdat de veiligheid niet kon worden gegarandeerd tijdens deze mars. We vinden het erg jammer dat onze mars is afgelast als gevolg van iets dat niets te maken heeft met de Palestijnse zaak. Maar we zijn duidelijk: we willen niet dat de Gentse Mars voor Palestina, op deze belangrijke symbolische dag – 30 maart vieren Palestijnen in Palestina en de diaspora Land Day, een dag van verzet – op welke manier dan ook in een verkeerd daglicht komt te staan. In overleg met het stadsbestuur stellen we een alternatief indoor evenement voor.

English: Yesterday 28/03, we , representatives of the Ghent Coalition for Palestine has a meeting with Ghent police at their request. There are considerable suspicions that the Ghent March for Palestine planned for Saturday could become the subject of Attacks between Gentenaars (Turkish and Kurdish Gentennars). We have been informed that a negative advice has been given from the police to the mayor because safety cannot be guaranteed during this march. We are very sorry to see our march cancelled as the result of something that has nothing to do with the Palestinian cause. But we are clear: we do not want the Ghent March for Palestine, on this highly symbolic day – 30 March Palestinians in Palestine and the diaspora celebrate Land Day , a day of resistance – to be risk to be seen in the wrong light in any way. We propose an Indoor alternative event, indoors.

Op zaterdag 30 maart komt de Gentse Coalitie voor Palestina samen onder de Stadshal in Gent voor een nieuwe solidariteitsmars ter ondersteuning van Gaza. Deze mars markeert de Landdag die elk jaar op 30 maart wordt herdacht, een belangrijk moment op de Palestijnse politieke kalender en een cruciale gebeurtenis in het Palestijnse collectieve verhaal – een verhaal dat de nadruk legt op het Palestijnse verzet tegen de Israëlische kolonisatie. Vandaag is het 48 jaar geleden dat de Israëlische politie zes Palestijnse burgers doodschoot toen ze protesteerden tegen de onteigening van Palestijns land door de Israëlische regering. Tegenwoordig symboliseert Landdag nog steeds het voortdurende Palestijnse verzet tegen de koloniale overheersing.

De voortdurende genocidale oorlog van Israël tegen Gaza heeft ondertussen meer dan 35.000 Palestijnse levens geëist. Met 75.000 gewonden en 1,9 miljoen ontheemden, en wijdverspreide hongersnood in heel de Gazastrook, is het lijden onvoorstelbaar. De internationale gemeenschap faalt door niet te eisen dat Israël zijn aanval definitief staakt en de belegering opheft, zodat levensnoodzakelijke humanitaire hulp en voedsel Gaza kan bereiken.

Op Landdag roepen we, samen met lokale en internationale organisaties, op tot een wereldwijde dag van actie voor Gaza. Samen met de Palestijnen dringen we erop aan dat de stad Gent, België en de hele internationale gemeenschap de juiste kant van de geschiedenis kiezen. We eisen een permanente wapenstilstand, een einde aan de Gaza-genocide, het beëindigen van de bezetting en het ontmantelen van het Israëlische apartheidsregime.

De optocht bevindt zich wederom uitsluitend in het historische centrum van Gent. Zowel bij aanvang als aan het einde van de mars zal er een podium zijn opgebouwd en staan er enkele speeches op het programma.

On Saturday, March 30th, the Ghent Coalition for Palestine will gather beneath the Stadshal in Ghent for a new solidarity march in support of Gaza. This march marks the Land Day, commemorated every year on March 30th, an important moment on the Palestinian political calendar and a crucial event in the Palestinian collective narrative – a narrative that emphasizes Palestinian resistance to Israeli colonization. Today marks 48 years since the Israeli police shot dead six Palestinian civilians as they protested against the confiscation of Palestinian land by the Israeli government. Today, Land Day still symbolizes ongoing Palestinian resistance against colonial domination.

Meanwhile, Israel’s ongoing genocidal war against Gaza has claimed more than 35,000 Palestinian lives. With 75,000 wounded and 1.9 million displaced, and widespread famine throughout the Gaza Strip, the suffering is unimaginable. The international community is failing by not demanding that Israel definitively cease its attack and lift the siege so that essential humanitarian aid and food can reach Gaza.

On Land Day, together with local and international organizations, we call for a global day of action for Gaza. Alongside Palestinians, we insist that the city of Ghent, Belgium, and the entire international community choose the right side of history. We demand a permanent ceasefire, an end to the Gaza genocide, the cessation of occupation, and the dismantling of the Israeli apartheid regime.

The demonstration will once again be exclusively in the historic center of Ghent. Both at the beginning and at the end of the march, a stage will be set up, and several speeches will be on the program.
